On Saturday, August 1st, more than 50 neighbors, artists, gardeners, volunteers and activists attended the Community Potluck Hibridos Collective co-hosted with Gonzalo Casals, a Jackson Heights neighbor interested in bringing residents together to celebrate arts and culture.

Attendees found their way to the cemetery through an alley ready to spark dialogue about unlocking the potential of the Leverich Family Burial Ground. All in all attendees were intrigued by the history of this abandoned 17th-century historical site in the heart of Jackson Heights. In a neighborhood with one of the lowest ratios of open space per resident, we could see people welcomed the opportunity to reimagine this hidden gem tucked between private homes and residential buildings.

Attendees brought their favorite summer bites to share. The gardeners in the crowd brought homemade salsa, potato salad and mint lemonade with vegetables they had grown in their yard or in one of the neighborhood gardens. Hibridos Collective invited attendees to share their ideas for ways the community can activate the space. Their ideas are like seeds that may sprout right away or take more time to grow but we are excited about starting a dialogue.

Now that folks have mingled, it’s time to get a little dirty and pick up a rake or a shovel. This Saturday, August 8th from 11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. we will restore the landscape by removing weeds and planting seeds. Learn how to make a seed bomb and help us design the flower gardens!

We will provide coffee, fruits, water, juice and snacks!
Bring a friend to give a helping hand or just come to make new neighbors!
